Manager as Coach. A New Perspective?

In a previous article entitled “Authors, Speakers, Trainers….Coaches?” we reviewed how each of these professions, and some say vocations, are or can be a Coach. For the original article, go to https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/author-speaker-trainercoach-robert-bob-minshall.

What if you’re a Manager for a company? Does "Coach" apply as well?

Absolutely.

I suggest that as a manager within your company regardless if the company is small, medium or an enterprise- YOU ARE.

Why?

Let’s review our previous definition of a coach by the leading global coaching organization, the International Coach Federation (ICF) in December 2011…

to partner with clients in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Change a couple of descriptions without changing the intent, and it becomes

to partner with team members (clients) in a definitive (thought-provoking) and creative process to mentor and lead (inspires) them to maximize their personal and professional objectives (potential).

Having been a manager and executive for various companies for 35+ years, the epiphany occurred- I’m a Coach. And most likely, like me, so are you.

HOW So?

  • If you work with people inside your company AND have a responsibility to present or assist other team members in presenting the company’s value, you’re a coach.

  • If you work with people outside your company AND have the responsibility to present and train them on the company’s value, you’re a coach.

  • If you have responsibility for team members to meet the objectives for the company and they lean on you to educate, evaluate and recommend how to achieve those goals, you’re a coach.

  • If you have the responsibility to present the company’s value and drive other people to positive conclusions of your business, you’re a coach.

It may not be an epiphany, but at least consider that as a Manager, in all likely-hood you’re also a Coach. And with that, think about how you can be more effective for your team not just as “Manager”, but as “Coach”; it’s a different perspective. After all, your Goal is…

To partner with team members in a definitive and creative process to mentor and lead them to maximize their personal and professional objectives.

And sometimes, a “Coach” can add more value to the teams effort than Manager.

Make it a Great Day!
